After its debut at the end of the 19th century, film slowly began to be considered a new art form. What happens when the "new" medium tells about old art? In this list I will present a subjective ranking of such films.

Movie – The Mill and the Cross

While watching the film by Polish director Lech Majewski, the viewer can move into the interior of Pieter Bruegel the Elder's painting "The Procession to Calvary". It is an experimental project in which the director brought to life hundreds of characters from the master's work created in the second half of the 16th century. The author tries to show the rich symbolism of the representation, "weaving a digital tapestry". The film is worth attention if only because of extreme opinions about it.

Andrei Rublev

The picture by one of the most famous Soviet film directors Andrei Tarkovsky is a collection of novellas related to the figure of Andrei Rublev (1360-1430). The main character was a Ruthenian monk, considered to be the most outstanding representative of the Moscow school of icon writing. The film is on the Vatican's list of 45 feature films that promote particular religious, moral or artistic values. It is worth watching for its lyricism, artistry and enigma, hardly present in cinema these days.

Goya's Ghosts

The film, directed by Miloš Forman, tells the story of the famous painter Francisco Goya's entanglement with the Spanish Inquisition. The genre of the picture can be described as a drama with biographical threads. The main roles are played by Javier Bardem, Natalie Portman and Stellan Skarsgård. Many film critics consider "Goya's Ghosts" to be a very successful cinematic comeback of the famous director.

Tulip Fever

The film with an all-star cast (Alicia Vikander, Christoph Waltz, Judi Dench) tells the story of how a portrait of a wealthy merchant's young wife was painted by a famous Amsterdam painter. Apart from the main plot, the painting refers to the huge increase in the price of tulips in 17th century Holland. These flowers became a symbol of luxury and were very often depicted in still lives from that period. Worth seeing because of the costumes and the atmosphere of the period.
