The director of the Giacometti Foundation has revealed details of the newly created Institute, scheduled to open on 20 June 2018. To mark the grand opening, the Giacometti Institute will reconstruct the sculptor's Parisian studio, which will be located in the historic Montparnasse district where the artist lived and worked.

Giacometti's Paris studio

The institute will occupy the site of the artist's former studio, as well as an interior designed by Paul Follot, which is located in a historic building renovated by architect Pascal Grasso. Catherine Grenier, who has headed the Foundation since 2014, will take on the role of director of the Institute, which will focus on exhibitions and research on Giacometti's work.

Total reconstruction

The main thrust of the institution is the complete reconstruction of the sculptor's studio, which has so far been cared for by his widow, Annette Giacometti. The studio will feature two of the three original walls, never-before-seen sculptures in plaster and clay, as well as authentic furniture and paintings.

In addition to its involvement with the artist's study, the Foundation is co-organising a number of exhibitions on the figure of Giacometti, taking place at the Beyeler Foundation (Bacon-Giacometti) in Basel (29.04-2.09); the Guggenheim Museum in New York (8.06-12.09); the Musée Maillol in Paris (14.09-20.01.2019); and the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao (19.10-24.02.2019), among others.
