Picasso’s painting from 1937, depicting Marie-Thérèse Walter, will be offered for February auction at Sotheby’s in London.  Since the artwork is worth around $50m, the painting is expected to be the main event of the evening.

Picasso in the opinion of specialists

Thomas Bompard, Senior International Specialist of Impressionist & Modern Art, points out a different manner in Picasso’s art which is "softer, more celebratory feel of the Marie-Thérèse" compared to other paintings created around that time.

Debut of the painting "Femme au béret et à la robe"

"Femme au béret et à la robe" since the artist’s death was in the private collection; Sotheby’s auction is the first time ever the painting is on the market. The presentation of the work will begin in Honk Kong (30 January – 2 February) and then it will transfer to Taipei (6-7 February). The Asian market is very interested in masterpieces which show "the power of real art" and, according to Bumper, Picasso’s painting is a perfect example of that kind of art.

The result of last year’s auction at Sotheby’s was a record for any London auction – Gustav Klimt’s "Bauerngarten" painted in 1907 was sold for $59m.
